“No matter what they wish for, no matter how far they go, people can never be anything but themselves.”
On her twentieth birthday, a young waitress could not enjoy her birthday. Instead, she was waiting on tables just like any other day on her birthday too. She was supposed to take the day off but her replacement for that day fell sick all of a sudden. So, her twentieth birthday went without celebration.
Later that evening, the manager fell ill – something that happens rarely. In these ten years, the manager had a weird job to do. He used to take dinner up to room no. 604.
Before he left, he asked the young waitress to do it on his behalf. There, she had an absurd encounter with the owner. On a rainy Tokyo night, the waitress was asked to make a wish which would be fulfilled.
What did she wish for? Was it fulfilled? Did she regret about it later? Read this truly satisfying short tale by Murakami which delivers a beautiful message in the end. The narration was so capturing. The vivid descriptions and the subtle imageries made the tale more intriguing. Would definitely suggest all of you to read it for the beautiful message it conveyed as it won’t take more than one sitting.
